He’s My Brother She’s My Sister‘s unique yet familiar sound exudes the earnestness of folk, the colorfulness of glam rock,  the rawness of blues, the theatrics of cabaret, and the hip shake of rock-a-billy.

Their voices range from boisterous to introspective, from breezy to emotive. Lauren Brown adds full-body percussion with her fluid tap-dancing. Oliver Newell plucks the stand up bass with joyous flair. Aaron Robinson plays lead guitar on a lap slide, veering from nuanced psychedelica to American roots riffs.

Escape to the End of Innocence

On May 9, 1965 a legendary meeting of The Beatles & Bob Dylan took place when the Fab Four attended Dylan’s concert in London. The Vietnam War was under way, MLK was giving profound speeches on civil rights, there was a social revolution in the works. In many ways the time marked the end of a certain innocence, and even naïveté, in the world. We would like to celebrate this ‘End of Innocence’ with a unique costume ball.

Come dressed in some way inspired by the theme ‘The End of Innocence‘ (open to interpretation) We will give away a limited edition Beatles Box of Vision or Bob Dylan Archive (your choice) to the most inspired lady and gentlemen with the most creative attire on the night.

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister plan great Escape…

For Immediate Release

April 20, 2011

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister plan great Escape

Band to Headline May Residency at The Satellite club in Silverlake, California

On five consecutive Monday nights in May, acclaimed band will invite audiences to Escape into evenings of decadent indulgence, high stakes seduction and music to stir the soul

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister, the psych-idyllic folk-rock ensemble with a touch of vaudeville glamour, will be curating and headlining five consecutive Monday night events at The Satellite (formerly Spaceland) in Silverlake, California, beginning May 2, 2011. This will be the acclaimed band’s first residency. They have invited a dizzying mix of friends and special guest performers to join them on the high wire for five separate evenings inspired by escape, enchantment and illusion in support of their new single Escape Tonight.

The band will be releasing a new recording and video in conjunction with each show of the residency, and they will play a different set every night–debuting new material from their upcoming album along with fan favorites from their recent self-titled EP, and songs inspired by each week’s theme. The new music and videos will be released as a weekly free download on the band’s website, www.HMBSMS.com. Fans who come to the residency shows will be able to take home a souvenir art-adorned flash drive card, including that week’s new music, video and photos.

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister are led by a brother and sister duo, the dueling lead singers and songwriters Rob Kolar and Rachel Kolar, tap-dancer Lauren Brown and cellist Satya Bhabha. Lauren has created a new form of continuous rhythm with her feet acting as a hi-hat and snare drum to propel the band’s sound. Satya plays the cello by both bowing and plucking it in a uniquely unconventional manner.  The shows are sure to feature much of the L.A. band’s mixture of colorful costumes, alleyway rhythms, and high energy. Their work has been well received and reviewed by Variety, LA Weekly, Deli Magazine, LA Record and other respectable publications.   The band will be joined on these special evenings by an extended family of musical accompanists including the brilliant lap-slide player Aaron Robinson (Sea Wolf, The Hi-Ho’s), Oliver Newell on upright bass (Amanda Jo Williams, Henry Wolfe), and Patrick Joseph on a non-traditional standing drum set up.

If you have yet to catch He’s My Brother She’s My Sister in a live setting, come see why they have been called “delightfully original” (Indieshuffle) “a time warp to the golden present” (LA Record) and “forward thinking folkies forging new ground”(New Times). “Rob and Rachel’s voices mingle like glamour in the desert” and serve up “party music for coyotes drunk on champagne” (LA Weekly). “Their mojo (has) the power to heal the afflicted” (Deli Magazine) so “see them before your friends do.” (Jambase)

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister: to play the Troubadour in L.A., Feb 3

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister returns to Los Angeles for a one night performance at The Troubadour opening for British singer-songwriter-guitarist Bobby Long, February 3, 2011

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister, the western-tinged, folk-rock ensemble, with a touch of vaudeville glamour, will be bringing their expanded (and slightly experimental) new show to the Troubadour in West Hollywood, on Friday, February 3. This will be the acclaimed band’s first Los Angeles live performance of 2011 after coming off the road opening for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes last fall.

The Los Angeles band’s mixture of colorful costumes, alleyway rhythms, and high energy entice audiences of all tastes and generations.  The band will be testing new material for an album along with their fan favorites from their recent self-titled EP.

Brother and sister, dueling lead singers and songwriters, Rob Kolar and Rachel Kolar, and tap-dancer Lauren Brown, will be joined on this special evening by an extended family of musical accompanists including the brilliant lap-slide player Aaron Robinson (Sea Wolf, The Hi-Ho’s), Oliver Newell on upright bass (Amanda Jo Williams, Henry Wolfe), and Patrick Joseph on a non-traditional standing drum set up.

If you have yet to catch He’s My Brother She’s My Sister live, come see why they have been called “delightfully original” (Indieshuffle) “a time warp to the golden present” (LA Record) and “forward thinking folkies forging new ground”(New Times). “Rob and Rachel’s voices mingle like glamour in the desert” and serve up “party music for coyotes drunk on champagne,” (LA Weekly). “Their mojo (has) the power to heal the afflicted” (Deli Magazine) so “see them before your friends do.” (Jambase)

HMBSMS has performed at the Sundance Film Festival, Manimal Vinyl Festival, Clean Air Clear Stars, The New Los Angeles Folk Festival, The North Park Music Festival, The New Noise Santa Barbara Music Festival, and this past summer toured Europe as the official band of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. They have shared the stage with The Devil Makes Three, Spindrift, Miranda Lee Richards, The Growlers, Local Natives, Frank Fairfield, and recently completed an October 2010 US tour supporting Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zero’s.

Robert Kolar has been writing and performing for many years and has gained notoriety and a strong following with his band Lemon Sun, a psychedelic, soulful, pop-tinged, rock & roll act. He recently won The John Lennon Songwriting Contest grand prize for his song “Same Old Ground” in the ‘rock’ category. He also recently starred in an art-house film- noir by cult director Monte Hellman titled “Road to Nowhere” also starring Shannyn Sossamon. The film was in official competition at the 2010 Venice Film Festival. Rachel Kolar writes much of the bandʼs lyrics and will often co-write with her brother. Rachel and Lauren Brown created and run POSTFACT Productions, a Los Angeles based theater company, which recently put on the successful show “NEW” at the Million Dollar Theater in downtown LA. Rachel wrote the musical/play and Lauren and Rachel both starred in it. They also starred in “The Parabox” a play written by Rachel and produced by POSTFACT. Their work is in the realm of the avant-garde and has been well received and reviewed by LA Weekly, LA Times, NY Times, Variety, and other respectable publications. Lauren has been tap dancing since she was 8 years old and has created a new form of continuous rhythm with her feet acting as a hi-hat and snare drum to propel the bandʼs sound. Satya Bhabha has starred in many off-Broadway productions. He recently moved to Hollywood and starred opposite Michael Cera in Universal’s “SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD” and Sean Penn in Doug Liman’s “FAIR GAME.” He directed POSTFACT Production’s run of “NEW.” He is currently in Sri Lanka filming the lead in the film version of Salman Rushdie’s “MIDNIGHT’S CHILDREN.”

They have plans for a full-length album in 2011 as well as tours of Europe and the United States.
